Tattoo Aftercare: What to Do (and Avoid) in the First 14 Days

A fresh tattoo is an open wound. Good aftercare helps it heal cleanly, keeps the ink crisp, and reduces irritation.

Quick rules

  • Wash hands before touching your tattoo.

  • Clean gently—no scrubbing.

  • Moisturize lightly (don’t smother it).

  • Avoid soaking (pools, hot tubs, baths) until fully healed.

  • Avoid sun exposure—keep it covered or shaded.

Days 1–3

Clean 2–3x/day with mild, fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel. Apply a thin layer of aftercare product.

Days 4–14

Expect peeling and itching. Don’t pick or scratch. Keep it clean and lightly moisturized.

What’s normal vs. not

  • Normal: mild redness, warmth, flaking, itching.

  • Not normal: spreading redness, heavy swelling, pus, fever, severe pain—seek medical advice.
